Acting Corporal Richard Robinson died, aged 21, under enemy fire in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan on 17 January, 2009.

Cpl Robinson, who served with the 1st Battalion The Rifles, was killed during an ambush north of Sangin District Centre while on a patrol to dominate ground with his Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) and the Afghan National Army (ANA) platoon with whom he had been operating since September 2008.

Cpl Robinson's senior officers in 1st Battalion The Rifles paid tribute to a hard-working and professional soldier who was "mature beyond his years".

Lieutenant Colonel Joe Cavanagh, Commanding Officer, 1 RIFLES, said: "For so many friends across the battalion and outside the Army, and most acutely for his friends and family, Corporal Richard 'Robbo' Robinson's death in action in Afghanistan will bring great sorrow.

"He was a popular, talented man and will be badly missed. Highly qualified and richly experienced for one of his vintage, he was credible and confident as an Acting Corporal and was already showing potential well beyond that.

"How proud we are of this courageous young man; he had achieved great things and yesterday he gave his all with his team around him. We are lucky to have served alongside him."

Cpl Robinson, from Saltash in Cornwall, who was known as "Robbo", joined the Army in December 2003, when he was 16.

After completing his training, he served in Iraq as a Private from April to November 2006.

He joined E Company, 1 Rifles in April 2008 as a sniper, mentor and section second-in-command, and deployed to Afghanistan at the end of September.

Cpl Robinson received the rank of acting corporal for the tour in recognition of his extra responsibilities as a mentor to the Afghan National Army working in isolated and austere patrol bases.

He was survived by his father Kenneth, mother Janet, sister Sophie and brother Matthew, who is serving in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

I went to school with Richard and I lament that I never spent more time with him when I could.

I am proud that he gave his life for his country, doing his duty. I would never have expected any less of him.

You are missed Richard. R.I.P

The angels sang "Amazing Grace"
And God came down and stroked your face
Then he whispered soft and low
"Come my friend, it's time to go"
RIP Brave Soldier.

Shay

Well what can i say. You touched so many lives when you were with us m8, still cant beleve that your gone. You were so young aswell, at least you died for what you beleve in. You were always the heart of the parties we use to have, and were always up for a laugh with your constant smile. Iv never known any to touch so many lives, where ever they went.

You will be deeply missed but now where near forgotten. My thoughts are with you and your family.
